What Helped Me Through Eleven Years of Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW)

For eleven years, I lived inside the fire of Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW) – a condition
that strips the skin, body, and spirit raw.
Some nights it was my skin burning and bleeding. Other nights it was my mind unraveling.
At times it was the silence of being unseen.
What helped me wasn’t one single cure or quick fix. It was different lifelines at different
times. What carried me in year one wasn’t what I needed in year seven, or in year eleven.

This is my TSW healing journey – and what helped me survive along the way.

The Early Years: Bare Survival in TSW

In the beginning, the symptoms of TSW were the rawest — nights of endless itching,
cracked skin, constant shedding. My body felt like it was on fire from the inside out.
In those years, TSW survival itself was the victory:

  • Ice packs on burning skin.
  • Salt baths to soothe for even a few minutes.
  • Heavy creams to protect wounds.
  • Clean sheets after nights of sweat and shedding.
“If I got three hours of broken sleep, if I could walk outside once, if I could breathe through
  • one more night — that was enough.”

The Middle Years: Emotional Anchors & Trauma Healing

As the years went on, the physical pain continued — but the emotional weight became just
as heavy.
Grief for the life I thought I had lost. Anger at the medical harm. Isolation so deep it felt like
a second skin.

What helped in this season wasn’t creams or ice packs anymore — it was finding ways to let
grief speak:

  • Journaling, even if it was just a few lines.
  • Trauma therapy and nervous system work.
  • The rare but invaluable presence of one or two people who stayed
This was when I realized my skin wasn’t only flaring. It was carrying the trauma and emotions I couldn’t speak. Writing became the place I could finally let those voices out.

The Later Years: Spiritual Threads in Healing

By the later years, my nervous system began to find cracks of rest. The flares still came, but
something softened.
What helped here wasn’t just physical survival or emotional release, but remembering there
was something deeper holding me:

  • Sitting in nature, letting the earth calm my body.
  • Prayer, meditation, and simple breathwork.
  • Small rituals that reminded me I was more than my skin.
These practices didn’t erase the pain, but they gave me a thread back to myself. They
  • reminded me that beneath the burning skin, there was still something whole.

Lessons From My TSW Healing Journey

What helped me in year one didn’t help me in year eleven. And that was okay.
Healing wasn’t about finding the one answer or the perfect cure. It was about listening:
what do I need now, in this season, in this body, in this moment?
Some days the answer was ice packs. Some days it was journaling through grief. Some days
it was a prayer whispered to the night sky.

Survival itself. Showing up again and again, in whatever way I could was the healing.

If you are here in the middle of Topical Steroid Withdrawal, know this: you don’t need to
figure it all out at once. You don’t need the perfect solution.

You only need the next thread. One practice. One person. One reminder that you are not
alone.

Different seasons of TSW recovery will ask for different lifelines. Let them change. That too
is healing.
