Skin as a Symbol: The Boundary That Holds Us Together

For as long as I can remember, boundaries were something I struggled with. I never fully understood where I ended and where someone else began. The concept itself felt foreign—until I began healing and learning more about what it truly means to protect my own space.

The people-pleasing trap

Growing up, I was a classic people pleaser. I found myself in relationships where I constantly needed to feel “needed.” It was my way of chasing validation—trying to fill a void from the outside in. It took me years to realize that true validation can only come from within, and anything external is simply a reflection, not a source.

The skin-boundary connection

The symbolism of skin fascinates me. Skin is our physical boundary. It is our first line of defense against the external world. It shields, filters, and protects. In many ways, it functions exactly like emotional and psychological boundaries do. It defines where we end and where the rest of the world begins.

What boundaries really are

Think of boundaries as invisible lines we draw—lines that say, “This is what I will allow,” and “This is where I draw the line.” They vary from person to person, and relationship to relationship. Some are firm and close, offering tight protection. Others are more flexible, depending on trust, comfort, and circumstance. But regardless of how they look, we all need them.

Why boundaries matter

We each have limits—emotional, mental, energetic. Boundaries aren’t about being harsh or unkind; they’re about honoring those limits. They help us determine who and what adds value to our life—and who might be draining us instead. When we understand our limits, we’re better equipped to make empowered choices about who we allow in, and how close.

My skin mirrored my internal world

Looking back, I can clearly see how my skin reflected my emotional world. The more I allowed my boundaries to be crossed, the more chaotic my skin became. The worse my boundaries, the worse my flare-ups. It was like my skin was screaming for the protection I wasn’t giving myself. It made perfect sense—my outer boundary (skin) mirrored the state of my inner ones.

Learning to protect my energy

I’ve come to understand just how vital it is to guard my energy. Healing—especially from chronic conditions like TSW and eczema—requires immense reserves of focus, time, and care. If I’m constantly giving my energy away to others, especially those who drain rather than uplift, there’s nothing left for me—and nothing left for healing.

Self-care, not selfishness

Learning to draw boundaries hasn’t been easy, and it’s still something I work on every day. But the more I honor my own needs, the more I have to give—on my terms. Protecting our energy isn’t selfish. It’s a necessary act of self-respect and self-preservation.

Because at the end of the day, healing requires everything we’ve got. And we owe it to ourselves to create a life—and a boundary system—that supports that.
