What Is Topical Steroid Withdrawal?

Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW), now known also as Topical Steroid Withdrawal Syndrome (TSWS) is a condition that many individuals using topical steroids for various skin conditions, most commonly eczema, are at risk for. As a lesser-known aspect of dermatological treatment, TSW presents a unique and challenging experience for those affected by it, myself included. Over the past decade or so of being in the world of TSW, I’ve seen the growth and rise in awareness of this condition over time.

Topical steroids are commonly prescribed for skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, among others, due to their anti-inflammatory properties. However, prolonged and/or heavy use of them can lead to TSW.

What is Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW)?

TSW is a complex iatrogenic condition which occurs when withdrawal symptoms are experienced after someone stops the use of topical steroids.

Symptoms may include redness, burning sensations, intense itching, nerve pain, oozing, insomnia, anxiety – among others. It’s important to note that TSW is not an allergic reaction but an entirely new condition caused by the use of steroids.

No proper care or support for those going through Topical Steroid Withdrawal

TSW often goes unnoticed or misdiagnosed, adding to the challenges faced by TSW folks like myself. I have spent countless doctors visits feeling like I am arguing or talking to a brick wall.

In turn, most of us don’t get the medical help we need, because frankly, it doesn’t really exist. Or at least, very little of it in todays age. The physical and emotional toll can be significant, impacting all parts of life. The visible effects on the skin lead to social discomfort, isolation, shame – and so much more

This lack of care, support and treatment are all some of the reasons it’s essential to raise awareness about the potential risks associated with topical steroid use – education and prevention is all we really have.

Managing and healing TSW

Managing TSW, in my opinion, involves a multidimensional approach. I went through so many stages in TSW that it’s impossible to keep track. I have tried it all, from Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic medicine, to meditation, hypnosis, and even energy healing. And each and every single thing I tried, whether it immediately seemed to help my symptoms of TSW or not, served a purpose and was an important part of my journey.

Topical Steroid Withdrawal sheds light on the complexities of dermatological treatments and the importance of informed and monitored use of topical steroids. As awareness grows, hopefully individuals and healthcare providers can work together to mitigate the impact of TSW and explore alternative approaches for managing skin conditions effectively.
